UPDATE: 1 JUNE 2024 – I closed my little bricks and mortar store at the end of 2023 when my lease came up for renewal. I still stock beautiful gift wrap however and am pleased to say new designs are currently available. I’ll be adding these to my online store. Alternatively drop me a message if you’d like to know more.
Wrapping paper, and then some!
Just look at these colours. New in store! These marbled by hand, 100% recycled cotton paper gift wrap sheets by Paper Mirchi are the cats pyjamas, slippers and pipe. Almost too good to use to be honest.
Price: 2.99 a sheet (50 x 76cm) and worth every penny
The paper is soft to the touch and very thick so suitable for crafting and book binding if you’re so inclined. It’s so beautiful you could even frame it. Each sheet is unique and the colours are really vibrant making any gift burst with colour.
How is the paper made?
The paper is hand made in India. This ancient skill includes chopping, pulping and dying cotton rags and textile scraps then laying it onto a mesh screen. The fibres are cellulose rich thereby binding together to form the paper.
Any excess water is squeezed out of the papers and they are hung out to dry. To smooth out the creases the paper is then smoothed out in a calendaring machine. I had no idea what one of these was so I had to look it up on Wiki.
The process means every sheet of cotton paper is unique; no two sheets are the same. We’ve already had some of our crafting customers snap it up, taking it home, not yet sure how or what they’ll use if for but telling us they couldn’t resist it.
A word from Rani at Paper Mirchi:
“At Paper Mirchi, we blend our passion for creativity and design with this age old technique of paper making to produce fabulous paper that you will love! With a wealth of experience in the textile industry, we incorporate interesting printing and dyeing techniques in an array of striking colours to bring to you an exclusive product. Cotton paper has exceptional strength – so we’ve even tried our hand at embroidery, and guess what…it worked!”
Pop in and take a look at this wonderful paper for yourself. My favourite is currently the pink but as I’ll be shortly expanding our range in store, this could change!
